Does academic writing book exist?
Well if it does exist it's fair to say that many academics haven't read it as yet. One of the most interesting aspects of academic life is that so much of the writing by academics is stodgy, poorly constructed and often very difficult to read. Why is it so? That is a very good question and many articles and blogs have been produced discussing this very topic.
But yes there are books for academic writing, they do exist and they are easily able to be obtained. Go online and search for 'academic writing book'. Mind you the business of writing well and the business of structuring your writing are just as important as the actual academic work you study.
But the question remains, why is it that so many academics have difficulty in writing well? You will find many a blog online which discusses this very topic. There are many blogs posing the question, why is academic writing so bad?
If you feel that your knowledge of a particular subject is broad and deep and that you have a strong grasp of your particular area of expertise, that does not mean that you will be able to express your thoughts and your knowledge in a coherent and interesting way. You may be skilled in one area of academia but not in another. Learning how to write in a fluid, exact and clear fashion is a skill in itself.
There are two topics at work here
By all means concentrate on your specific topic in your academic writing and gain as much knowledge and detail as possible. But do not neglect the means by which you will communicate your expertise and knowledge. In short, perfect your writing skills.
It is a sad but sorry indictment of our education system when colleges create a new subject which basically deals with teaching their students how to write well. You would think that this topic would surely have been covered in the previous decade of a college student's education. Sadly this is not the case. So if in your academic writing you find your actual writing skills are below par, put time aside to find out how to improve your ability to write.
When you have your body of knowledge in your chosen academic life, being able to express it well through your excellent writing skills will be the icing on the cake. Prepare yourself in both areas in order to produce quality writing.
